Social Ads Agency

The plain-English guide

Social media advertising: how it works, what it costs, who it fits

This is the guide we wish every business owner read before their first campaign: how the auctions price attention, what the numbers really mean, and how to judge any agency that wants your budget, including us.

The short answer

  • Social media advertising is paid interruption: you buy attention from people who were not searching for you.
  • Costs are auction-set. You control total spend; $1,000/month is the practical floor for lead generation.
  • The channel that fits depends on what you sell: Meta, Instagram or TikTok. Some businesses should buy search instead, and this guide says which.

What social media advertising is (and is not)

Social media advertising is paid placement in the feeds of Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok: ads bought through an auction, shown to audiences you define, measured against actions you choose. It is not organic posting, follower growth or content calendars. The 2 disciplines are routinely sold together, which is exactly why so many businesses cannot tell what their ad spend achieved: the report mixes paid results with organic vanity metrics until nothing is checkable. We sell the ads only, so nothing in this guide needs to flatter a content calendar.

How the ad auction actually prices your ads

Every time a feed loads, an auction runs. Advertisers bid for the impression, and the platform ranks bids by a blend of money and predicted engagement: an ad people respond to costs less per result than an ad they scroll past, because the platform profits from keeping the feed watchable. Meta documents this in its ad auction help documentation, and TikTok's system works on the same principle (see the TikTok for Business help centre). 2 practical consequences:

  • Creative is a pricing lever, not decoration. Better ads literally cost less.
  • Nobody can quote your exact cost per click from a rate card. Anyone who does is guessing.

What social media advertising costs in Australia

2 costs, never confused: ad spend (paid to the platform, set by you) and management (paid to your agency). Our management fee is $750+GST/month, published. For ad spend, $1,000/month is the practical floor for lead generation: platform delivery systems optimise on conversion volume, and budgets below that starve the learning. Established local businesses typically run $2,500 to $5,000/month; TikTok's own minimums make roughly $900/month the entry point there.

Percentage-of-spend agency fees rise when your budget does; a flat fee does not. That is why ours is flat.

Which channel fits which business

  • Meta ads: the default for most Australian service and local businesses. Biggest audience, strongest retargeting, most forgiving creative formats.
  • Instagram ads: visual-first products and under-45 discovery buyers. Bought Instagram-led when the product sells on sight.
  • TikTok ads: cheapest attention, most demanding creative. Impulse-friendly offers and businesses that can produce native vertical video.

Who should not buy social media advertising

Paid social is interruption. If your customer only wants you at the moment something breaks, interruption is structurally the wrong buy: nobody scrolling Instagram needs an emergency plumber right now, and the ones who do are typing into Google. Emergency trades, urgent repairs, towing, after-hours vets: buy search intent first. We wrote the full comparison, and it names the businesses that should take their budget to Google Ads instead of us.

How to judge a social ads agency (including us)

4 questions separate agencies that measure from agencies that perform measurement:

  1. 1Where does your reporting come from? The only good answer is your analytics, verified, with the platform's claim shown alongside. Platform dashboards over-attribute by design. We audited 87 small-business GA4 properties in August 2026: 55 were measuring nothing real.
  2. 2What is the fee, in dollars, on your website? If the price only exists inside a sales call, the price is negotiable and so is the honesty.
  3. 3What will the landing page be? An agency that sends paid traffic to your homepage is burning your budget. The destination page decides whether cold traffic converts.
  4. 4Which businesses do you turn away? An agency with no wrong-fit answer sells every channel to everyone.

For independent grounding on advertising your business, the Australian Government's business.gov.au marketing guidance is a sensible starting point.

Social media advertising questions, answered straight

Is social media advertising worth it for small businesses?

When the product suits discovery and the landing page is built to convert cold traffic, yes: it reaches customers search never sees. When demand is urgent and intent-driven, no: search converts that demand at far higher rates. The fit question comes before the budget question, always.

How much should a small business spend on social media ads?

Start from the floor that lets the platform optimise: $1,000/month of ad spend for Meta lead generation, roughly $900/month minimum on TikTok. Scale on verified cost per lead, never on platform-reported numbers alone.

What is the difference between paid social and organic social?

Paid social buys guaranteed reach through an auction and is measurable to the dollar. Organic social earns reach through content and is largely unmeasurable as a sales channel. We run paid only: we run the ads, we don't post to your feed.

Can you guarantee results from social media advertising?

No, and no honest agency can: the auction, your offer and your market decide outcomes. What we guarantee is the discipline: verified measurement, a published fee, a purpose-built landing page argument, and a written plan that names the right channel even when it is not one we sell.
